Activities & Adventures in Kosi Bay
Whether you are looking to explore local culture on a budget, cast a line in an angler’s paradise, or experience bucket-list wildlife encounters, Kosi Bay offers something unforgettable for every traveler.
🌍 Local Culture & Budget-Friendly Exploring
You don’t need to spend a fortune to experience the unique heartbeat of Maputaland. Take a day trip into the nearby town of eManguzi (KwaNgwanase) to immerse yourself in local life:
Taste Local Flavors: Stroll down the main road and try a "Paya" (pronounced pie-ya). It’s a delicious, filling local vetkoek stuffed with savory potato filling for just R1 each. Add some local peri-peri hot chili sauce if you are feeling brave!
Street Markets: Explore vibrant roadside stalls bursting with fresh, seasonal produce like mangoes, avocados, coconuts, and bananas. You will also find local root vegetables like Madumbi and Cassava (Dombolo), fresh lake fish, unique hand-woven clothing, bright wrap-around sarongs, and beautiful handmade wooden crafts.
🎣 A Fisherman’s Paradise
Kosi Bay is world-renowned among angling enthusiasts. Bring your boat, your fishing gear, and your sense of adventure! From drop shots and long lines to deep-sea shore fishing, you can target premier species like Kingfish, Pike, Rock Salmon, Grunter, and Bream.
Shore Angling: Within the Lake System, shore fishing is strictly permitted only from within the reserve campsite.
Boat Angling: Off-shore boat fishing is allowed in 1st Lake (Makhawulani), 2nd Lake (Mpungwini), and 3rd Lake (Nhlange). Please note that access is strictly denied to 4th Lake (Amanzamnyama).
Fly Fishing: Becoming increasingly popular in our waters, with "tag and release" highly encouraged to preserve our marine heritage.
🤿 Snorkelling the Kosi Mouth Reef
Discover a breathtaking underwater world right inside the mouth of the Kosi system. The shallow reef is packed with colorful marine life and offers a world-class snorkeling experience.
4x4 Route: Direct vehicle access to the beach is only possible via a 4x4 track, and an official permit must be obtained from the reserve reception office.
Sedan / 4x2 Route: If you do not have a 4x4, you can drive to the main access gate. From there, you can walk about 2 km down a very steep sand dune to the beach (hiring a local guide/gillie is highly recommended). Note: Due to the steep terrain, this walk is not recommended for the elderly or very young children.
🐢 Seasonal Turtle Tracking Tours
Witness a prehistoric miracle. From November to January, ancient Leatherback and Loggerhead sea turtles emerge from the ocean at night to nest on our beaches.
How to Book: Tours must be booked through registered concession holders. Enquiries can be made directly at the Kosi Bay reserve reception office.
Note: It is a serious legal offence to disturb nesting turtles or any scientific tracking equipment on the beach.
🏖️ Pristine Beach & Estuary Day Trips
Explore the untouched, wild coastlines surrounding us. You can plan unforgettable day excursions to Kosi Estuary, Bhanga Nek, Black Rock, Rocktail Bay, or Lala Nek.
Permit Requirements: Valid entry permits are strictly required for all of these locations. Permits for Kosi Mouth, Bhanga Nek, and Black Rock are issued on a first-come, first-served basis daily at the reception office.
Vehicle Access: A 4x4 vehicle is mandatory to reach these hidden coastal spots.
🐘 Wildlife Safaris
Tembe Elephant Park (Huge Tuskers & Lions)
Pack a picnic lunch, jump in your 4x4, and spend a thrilling day at Tembe Elephant Park. Famous for hosting some of Africa’s largest remaining "Great Tusker" elephants, no two visits here are ever the same. Watch magnificent elephant herds gather around the marshlands and watering hole hides, or spot pride of lions lounging right in the sand tracks.
Ponta do Ouro, Mozambique (Cross-Border Adventure)
Experience a taste of Mozambican beach culture! Located just north of the South African border, Ponta do Ouro ("Tip of Gold") is famous for its lively atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and local markets.
Travel Time: It is roughly a 1-hour drive from Palm Tree Lodge, including the border post transition.
Vehicle Access: The roads past the border consist of very soft, deep sand tracks. A 4x4 vehicle is absolutely essential for this trip.
